Cyclones Skid Continues With 7-1 Loss

August 15, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

BROOKLYN, NY - It was the same old story for the Brooklyn Cyclones on Saturday evening as they lost their fifth straight game, this time to Hudson Valley by the score of 7-1. The Cyclones have scored just one run in their last 27 innings, and find themselves in last place in the McNamara Division in August for the first time in franchise history.

After trading zeroes through the first four frames, Brooklyn drew first blood in the top of the fifth. Manuel Hilario started the threat with a one-out triple and with Alfredo Reyes batting, Renegades starter Michael Velasquez bounced an 0-1 pitch, that got by Hudson Valley catcher Danny De La Calle, and allowed Hilario to score for the first run of the game.

That lead would be short-lived however because the Renegades took a lead they would never relinquish in the bottom of the frame. Jose Perez and De La Calle had back-to-back singles that put runners on the corners with nobody out. Brooklyn starter Gaby Almonte then struck out Jake Cronenworth for out number one. But Michael Russell followed with a line-drive double down the left field line that scored a pair and put Hudson Valley in front 2-1. Almonte bounced back, striking out Joe McCarthy, but Hector Montes followed with a two-out RBI double to score Russell and push the Renegades lead to 3-1. That would be the end of the road for Almonte, who was lifted by manager Tom Gamboa and then thrown out of the game while walking to the dugout by home plate umpire Matt Scott. Almonte felt he had struck out Montes on several occasions before surrendering the run scoring double .

Ruben Reyes was the first man out of the bullpen for Brooklyn, escaping further damage in the fifth, but found himself in a jam in the bottom of the sixth. Jose Paez had a one-out single and stole second before coming home on an Danny De La Calle's second hit of the game that made it 4-1 in favor of the Renegades.

Hudson Valley's offensive surge continued in the seventh when they plated three more insurance runs off of Brooklyn reliever Johnny Magliozzi to make the final score 7-1.

Brooklyn will look to snap their losing skid on Sunday afternoon at MCU Park when they take on the Renegades at 5:00 PM in the final game before the New York-Penn League All-Star Break. It's a Sunday Funday at MCU Park so that means all kids will be able to run the bases after the game and there will also be a special vintage baseball game prior to first pitch. Tickets start at just $10 and are on sale now by calling 718-507-TIXX, logging on to BrooklynCyclones.com, or in person at the MCU Park Box Office.
