Big Third Inning for Aberdeen Sinks Tigers

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (25-27) dropped their fourth straight game on Saturday night as they fell 8-3 in the opening game of the series against the Aberdeen IronBirds (27-27).

With the game scoreless in the third inning the IronBirds jumped all over Tigers starter Ryan Castellanos (1-1). In the inning the first five batters all reached. Right fielder Mike Odenwaelder (2-4, 2 R, 2B), second basemen Drew Turbin (2-4, R) and centerfielder Cedric Mullins (3-5, 2 RBI, 2 R) all singled to load the bases. Aberdeen scored their first run on an RBI single by shortstop Ricardo Anujar. The next batter was Baltimore Orioles first round pick the leftfielder DJ Stewart and he effectively put the game away with a grand slam to right field making the score 5-0 after three.

The IronBirds scored single runs in each of next three innings to take a commanding 8-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth Connecticut pushed a run across. Third basemen Steven Fuentes (1-4) singled and scored on a wild pitch. Connecticut had chances to get back into the ball game but left ten runners on including seven in scoring position over the last five innings.

Castellanos who took the loss for Connecticut worked the first four innings allowing eight hits and six runs with five being earned. He struck out three and walked none. The Tigers used four pitchers on the night.

Robert Strader started the game for Aberdeen and pitched two scoreless innings but it was Kevin Grendell (3-1) who picked up the win. Grendell pitched three innings giving up two hits and striking out five.

Connecticut will play the second game of a two game series at home against Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
