Cutters Winning Streak Snapped by Mahoning Valley
August 15, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters saw their five game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Mahoning Valley on Saturday night. The 3-0 loss is just the second time this season that the Cutters have been shutout out offensively. Williamsport holds the best record in the New York Penn League along with remaining in first place in the Pinckney Division over State College.
The Crosscutters fell behind to Mahoning Valley early as the Scrappers scored a run in the top of the first inning against Alejandro Arteaga. The Scrappers would make it 2-0 in the top of the second inning as Austin Fisher delivered a RBI hit. Arteaga would settle in for the Cutters as he worked four consecutive scoreless innings.
Williamsport would have to turn to the bullpen in the seventh inning as Andrew Godail took over for Arteaga. It would be a tough night for the Cutters offense as their first hit would come off a bunt single from Zach Coppola in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cutters would strand seven runners on base in the game.
The bottom of the seventh inning looked to be most promising for Williamsport as they were able to load the bases against Mahoning Valley. Jose Pujols lead off the inning by reaching on a dropped third strike and would be followed with a double from Venn Biter. Pujols would be thrown out at the plate trying to score on a groundball hit by Jan Hernandez to third base. The hit by Biter extended his hitting streak to 13 games and Austin Bossart extended his on base streak to 23 games as he reached on an error and was hit by a pitch. His 18 game hitting streak came to an end but is the longest streak this season in the New York Penn League.
