Cyclones Run Win Streak To Four
December 7, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones, the ECHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, host the East Division leading Reading Royals in a pair of games this weekend. Saturday night (December 12), the clubs collide in a 7:30pm clash. On Sunday (December 13), the teams meet for a 2:30pm matinee showdown.
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS: Saturday night (December 12), it is the 'Wildman Wobler' giveaway where the first 2000 fans receive a commemorative wobler of the only PA announcer the club has ever had. Sunday (December 13), it is the 'Kids Club Game' where members of the Cyclones 'Kids Club' receive all kinds of perks--including a special postgame skate and autograph session.
WEEK IN REWIND: The Cyclones went 3-0 on the week to take over sole possession of second place in the North Division. Cincinnati is just one point behind Kalamazoo at the start of the week and is five points ahead of both Toledo and Wheeling, who are tied for third place.
TRANSACTIONS: Goaltender Mark Dekanich and defenseman Reid Cashman have both been recalled by the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and goaltender Jeremy Smith and forward Matt Pierce have been returned to the team. The Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL) have assigned forward Maxime Lacroix to the Cyclones. He will be arriving in Cincinnati during the week and is expected to be activated on the roster prior to the weeekend.
PLAYER APPEARANCE TUESDAY: The Cyclones will have forward Barret Ehgoetz and defenseman Jamie Coghlan at Meijer's Florence location on Tuesday, December 8 from 6pm-7:30. Autographs and Cyclones merchandise will be available for those there during that time.
ABOUT WEDNESDAY...: The Cyclones scored goals 86 seconds apart in the first period and used a solid defensive effort to claim a 2-1 win over Kalamazoo. Robert Mayer made 24 saves and limited the Wings to just one goal in picking up the victory. Mike McLean and Brett Robinson had the assists in the triumph.
ABOUT FRIDAY...: Goaltender Mark Dekanich, who had been assigned to the club the day before from Milwaukee, stopped 24 shots and another four in the shootout to pick up a 2-1 win over Florida. Hans Benson's first goal of the season in the opening minute of the second period was all the offense the club would have in regulation time--but scores from Dustin Sproat and Scott Reynolds in the shootout would propel the club to victory.
ABOUT SATURDAY...: Goaltender Mark Dekanich stopped all 27 shots in post his first ECHL shutout in a 3-0 whitewashing of Florida. Barret Ehgoetz, Brett Robinson and Brett Motherwell all scored within 1:59 of each other to blow the game open in the second period. Cincinnati's power play kicked in scoring twice and Reid Cashman handed out a pair of assists.
BACK ON THE VICTORY TRAIL: The Cyclones are riding a season-long four game winning streak--the longest since a four-game victory streak at the end of last season (March 28-April 4). The last time the squad had at least a five game winning streak was a six game stretch from Jan. 10-24.
RETURN OF THE NO GOAL PATROL!: The Cyclones penalty killing unit, which had allowed 15 power play goals in the eleven game prior to the start of last week (73.2 percent kill efficiency), responded by erasing all 13 shorthnaded chances this week. The 'No Goal Patrol' started the season by killing the 34 opposing power plays allowed in the first eight games and is presently riding a streak of 17 straight kills. The penalty kill, which was ranked tenth in the ECHL at 83.3 percent at the start of last week, has moved up to third at 85.4 percent. Last season, Cincinnati ranked 21st in the league at just 79.9 percent.
ATTENDANCE NUMBERS STRONG: The Cyclones are averaging 4298 per game through the first ten contests at U.S. Bank Arena, which ranks eleventh in the ECHL. The club has already drawn the second-largest (10,920 for Throwback Night on November 6) and fourth-largest (8944 for Education In Hockey Day on November 17) regular season crowds. Attendance at Cyclones games is up 36.7 percent over last year's season average and is up 68.1 percent over the first ten games of a year ago.
CLIMBING HIGH...: When the Cyclones returned to hockey in 2006-07, they finished 25th of 25 teams in attendance at 1844 per game. During the 2007-08 Kelly Cup march, the squad attracted 2523 per game--an increase of 36.8 percent. That percentage was the greatest of any team playing minor pro hockey. Last year, the team attracted 3104 per game--an increase of 23 percent, second-best in all of minor pro hockey.

CYCLONES COACHES SHOW: The weekly Coors Light Cyclones Coaches Show has been moved for this week (tonight) only. It will be held at Longworth's (Mt. Adams) NOT at Jefferson Hall at Newport on the Levee. Head Coach Chuck Weber will join host Nick Brunker from 7-8pm. There will NOT be a player guest this week--as the players have their Christmas Party scheduled for tonight. The show will resume at Jefferson Hall next week and there will be players at that show. There will NOT be a show on Monday, December 21--as the players are on their Christmas break.

CYCLONES AND THE AHL: Last week, three players earned promotions to the American Hockey League. Adam Henrich, Matt Pierce and Jeremy Smith were the players to move to hockey's AAA level. The Cyclones have had nine players receive call ups this season and that runs the four year total under Head Coach Chuck Weber to 57.
CH-CH-CH-CHANGES...: The Cyclones have employed 16 different lineups this season in the first 22 games. Cincinnati has lost players for 52 games through call ups and 80 games due to injury. The club is averaging having six players out per game due to injury and call ups. Last season, the Cyclones used 45 different lineups and in the four seasons Chuck Weber has been coach, the squad has utilized 158 different lineups (in 238 games).
WE LOVE HOME COOKING!: The Cyclones have won eight games at U.S. Bank Arena this season, tied with three other teams for second-most in the ECHL. Bakersfield (10 wins) is the only other club in the league with more wins than Cincinnati. Since April 1 of last season, the Cyclones are 11-2 at home (.846 winning percentage) and since January 10, the squad is 21-7 at U.S. Bank Arena (.750).
BUT WE'RE ONLY AT HOME WHEN WE ARE ON THE ROAD: The Cyclones have played twelve road games (seventh-most) in 2009-2010. Cincinnati has won 65 road games between the regular season and playoffs since the start of the 2007-08 season--most of any team in the league.
BRETT BRINGS IT...: Cyclones rookie forward Brett Robinson has had a strong two week run. After going without a goal in his first 15 games, the Alton, ON native collected his first pro goal in the 4-1 win over Kalamazoo on December 2, adding an assist earlier in the contest as well. Since then, he has gotten the hang of the goal scoring thing. Brett has scored six goals in seven games and ranks fifth on the club in goal scoring.
IT'S ALWAYS BETTER ON TOP!: The Cyclones have crept within one point of the North Division leaders Kalamazoo. While Cincinnati has not led the North yet this season, the two-time defending division champions have led 261 days under Head Coach Chuck Weber.
EHGOETZ MOVES UP: Cyclones center Barret Ehgoetz has spent the last five seasons playing on teams coached by Chuck Weber. In 2005-06, Ehgoetz played with Utah and then-assistant coach Weber. When the coach elevated his title and took the top job in Cincinnati--one of the first players contacted was Ehgoetz. The fifth-year player from Kincardine, ON has flourished and on December passed Sheldon Gorski for the club's career games played lead (219 games). Ehgoetz already holds the career assist record (123) and shorthanded goals mark (five). Barret ranks second on the list in points (188), goals (65), shots (551) and plus/minus (+45).
WE DON'T DO OVERTIME MUCH...: The Cyclones became the last team in the American Conference to reach overtime this season. Cincinnati and Las Vegas have each played two overtime contests this season, fewest in the ECHL. The Cyclones are the only team in the league to have all their overtime decisions settled by shootout--everyone else has had a game won or lost in the overtime session preceding it.
COACHES SHOW: The Coors Light Cyclones Coaches Show originates each Monday night from Jefferson Hall at Newport on the Levee. Head Coach Chuck Weber joins Nick Brunker each week from 7-8pm. For this week the show is at Longworth Hall.
