Cyclones Rally to Earn Point, But Fall in Shootout 5-4

February 17, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones (22-18-1-7) rallied from a 4-1 third period deficit to force overtime but ultimately fell in a shootout to the Kalamazoo Wings (29-16-2-3) by a 5-4 final score in front of 4,262 at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night.

The Wings jumped ahead 1-0 at 6:38 as Dustin Cloutier caught a pass from Darren Archibald in the Cincinnati slot and lit the lamp, making it 1-0. Then, with just over 30 seconds to play in the period, Brian Haczyk camped out in front of the Cyclones net and directed a shot past Chet Pickard (SOL, 28 saves, 9-10-0-2) for a 2-0 Kalamazoo lead at the first intermission.

Right out of the gate in the second period, Kalamazoo added to their lead as Darryl Bootland deflected Taylor Ellington's point shot into the net at the 0:18 mark to give the Wings a 3-1 lead. The Cyclones stopped the bleeding at 12:25 when Dan Eves followed up his own shot and lifted a rebound past Wings goaltender Maxime Clermont (W, 32 saves, 9-7-1), making it a 3-1 game after 40 minutes.

Things looked bleak early in the third period as, just 1:30 into the frame, Kory Karlander sent a high wrist shot over the glove of Pickard and in for a 4-1 Wings cushion. However, Cincinnati began to chip away at the lead; at 7:17, Jeremy Klaver poked a puck just over the goal line and into the net, making it 4-2. The offense slowed down for a bit before Cincinnati got the first of two power plays at 17:18, as Bootland was whistled for interference. While on the power play, Pelech caught a pass from the corner and blasted in his 12th goal of the season to pull the Cyclones within one. Then, on another Bootland penalty, the Cincinnati man-advantage unit cashed in again; as Pelech took a shot from the left circle, the rebound deflected right to Justin Vaive and tied the score at four with 1:30 to go in regulation.

Neither team could find the game-winner in the final minutes or in overtime, so the game was to be decided in a shootout. The first two shooters for Kalamazoo, Justin Taylor and Taylor Ellington, lit the lamp while Eves and Anthony Luciani were both denied. In round four, Matt Sisca potted a goal to keep Cincinnati alive but Karlander followed in the fifth round and sealed the 5-4 Wings win with a goal of his own.
