Wheeling Nailers News Release

JOHNSTOWN, PA - Denver Manderson scored two goals, Patrick Killeen made 24 saves, and the Nailers regained first place in the division, with their 4-2 victory over the Elmira Jackals.

Matt Schepke started off the period with a shot from the left circle that looked like it could be the opening goal, but Timo Pielmeier made a huge save to keep the Nailers off the board. After a tripping call against Zach Hansen, Elmira had the first power play opportunity of the night. Patrick Killeen made several impressive saves, preventing the Jackals from picking up an early lead. Despite good chances for both teams, the first period came to a close with no score.

The Nailers opened the action early in the second period, as Denver Manderson scored his 15th of the season, with a shot from the right circle that went top shelf on Pielmeier. Manderson's goal was his fourth in as many games. Alec Kirschner notched his first point in a Nailers jersey on the play. A good rush starting in the defensive zone nearly put the Nailers up 2-0. Adam Ross and John Kurtz dropped the gloves, before Christaan Minella put the puck behind Pielmeier, to give the Nailers a two-goal lead. Elmira answered back quickly, as Artem Demkov scored his 14th of the season against Killeen. The Nailers and Jackals traded power play opportunities later in the period. Demkov nearly scored his second of the night on Elmira's power play, but the goal was immediately waved off due to a high stick to end the period.

Manderson took the period's first penalty three minutes into the third, with a tripping call. The Nailers successfully killed the penalty, despite several good chances for the Jackals. A great steal in neutral ice led Manderson into the offensive zone for his second goal of the game, unassisted, to give the Nailers a 3-1 lead. With Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel in the box for tripping, Elmira nearly scored shorthanded, but Nick Schaus hit the puck off the post before Killeen grabbed the rebound. With 2:34 to go, Elmira pulled Pielmeier for the extra attacker, but Chris Barton put the puck in the empty net for his 24th of the season. Andrew Hotham picked up an assist on the play. Elmira looked to be done for the night, but Deiude-Fauvel picked up his first goal of the season, unassisted, with 45 seconds to go. Despite Deiude-Fauvel's attempt, the Nailers defeated the Jackals 4-2, and regained first place in the division.

The Nailers are on the road for their next nine games before they return to Cambria County War Memorial to face off against the Florida Everblades on March 9 and 10. They will then come back to WesBanco Arena March 11 against the Toledo Walleye. For ticket information or to purchase tickets call 304-234-GOAL (4625) or online at shop.wheelingnailers.com.
