Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
WHEELING, West Virginia - Two shorthanded goals five minutes apart for Wheeling's Sean Collins were the difference in a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday night. Collins' scored with 23 seconds left was the final tally in the verdict. Wasted was the fact that Cincinnati rallied four times from deficits to tie the game-it would be just one short of what the team needed.
Wheeling opened the scoring 5:17 into the game, when Vin Hellemeyer netted his fifth goal of the season, on a deflection of a Paul Bissonnette shot. Cincinnati tied the game at 1-1, when Jason Deitsch picked up the rebound off a Jean-Michel Daoust shot and deposited it into an empty net. Greg Stewart picked up the other assist for the Cyclones. The Nailers made sure they had the lead after the first period, as Jordan Cameron lit the lamp for the 27th time this season, with a power play tally at 19:38. Cincinnati led the shots on goal battle after the opening 20 minutes by a 9-4 count.
The Cyclones tied the game 11:32 into the second period, when Barett Ehgoetz tipped home his 17th goal of the season from the top of the goal crease. Mike Wirll chased down a puck in the right corner and fed it in front, where Ehgoetz turned it into the back of the net to level scores at 2-2. The shots on goal in the period were even at 13 apiece.
The fireworks started in the third period, as five goals settled the affair. Wheeling took a 3-2 edge when Ned Havern collected his 17th goal of the season on the power play at 8:02. The Cyclones answered at 14:18, when Sam Ftorek, back in the lineup after missing twelve games with an injury, fired home his 18th goal of the season from feeds from Deitsch and Rory Rawlyk. Sean Collins gave the Nailers a 4-3 edge at 15:13, with his 23rd goal of the season-netting it shorthanded.
Jean-Michel Daoust collected his 28th goal of the season at 17:44, when he fired home a power play goal, with Deitsch and Rawlyk tallying the assists. Collins buried his 24th goal on a shorthanded effort at 19:37 to provide the margin of victory for Wheeling
The Cyclones are now 35-27-3-2, second in the North Division five points behind Dayton. Wheeling is 30-31-2-4 on the season, sixth-best in the North Division. Cincinnati continues its four game road trek tomorrow night (Saturday, March 31) with an 8pm game at Wheeling.
The Cyclones need one point in the standings gained, or one point lost by the Johnstown Chiefs to clinch a playoff berth.
