Cyclones Get Chances Late, Ultimately Fall in Shootout

Cincinnati, OH - The Cincinnati Cyclones (3-1-0-1) fell to the Toledo Walleye, 2-1 in a shootout, on Wednesday night. Forward Zach Budish scored the lone goal in regulation for the Cyclones.

After a fast paced, back-and-forth, scoreless opening period, Toledo took a 1-0 lead early in the second, when forward Shane Berschbach found the back of the net for the third time this season, 2:30 into the frame.

Cincinnati had a number of quality scoring chances through the rest of the second however could not find the back of the net, and the Walleye took their 1-0 into the locker room after 40 minutes.

The Cyclones wasted little time tying things up in the third, as just 42 seconds in, defenseman Steve Weinstein sent a pass around the boards to Budish at the top of the right circle, and he hammered a shot past Walleye netminder Jeff Lerg, pulling the Cyclones even with Toledo, 1-1.

Cincinnati had a number of Grade A scoring chances throughout the remainder of the third, however Lerg turned aside the remaining 10 shots he faced in the period, and the two sides headed to overtime.

In the three-on-three extra session, the Cyclones continued to get quality scoring chances, including a pair of breakaways from forward Jack Downing, however Cincinnati was not able to find the back of the net, thus sending the game to a shootout.

In the skills competition, the Cyclones sent forwards Joe Pendenza and Nick Huard out, but neither were able to beat Lerg. Toledo countered with Berschbach, who missed, and forwards Kyle Bonis and A.J. Jenks who each scored, sending Toledo to the shootout win.

Cyclones goaltender Brad Thiessen had another solid outing, stopping 30 of the 31 shots he faced in the loss. The shots were even at 31 apiece, while Cincinnati's power play was held scoreless on each of its four chances. The Cyclones next take the ice on Friday night, when they welcome in the Adirondack Thunder to U.S. Bank Arena. Faceoff is set for 7:30pm.
