Quad City's Michalek Named CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month

PRINCETON, N.J. - Quad City Mallards' goaltender Steve Michalek is the CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month for October.

The 22-year-old was 2-1-2 with a 1.95 goals-against average and a save percentage of .933 in five appearances during the month.

A native of Hartford, Conn., Michalek earned the win in his pro debut, turning aside 33 shots in a 2-1 win at Allen on?Oct. 16. He made at least 31 saves in three of his five appearances and allowed two goals or less in four of his five games.

A sixth-round selection (161st overall) by the Minnesota Wild in the 2011 NHL?Entry Draft, Michalek is second among rookie goaltenders with a 1.95 goals-against average and sixth among first-year netminders with a .933 save percentage.

Prior to turning pro, Michalek appeared in 79 career games at Harvard University posting a record of 33-28-13 with five shutouts, a 2.59 goals-against average and a save percentage of .914. He also appeared in 17 games with Cedar Rapids of the United States Hockey League where he was 7-6-3 with a 3.09 goals-against average and a save percentage of .900.
