BIG BEER TUESDAY / COUNTRY NIGHT
TODAY'S MATCHUP: With just two more head-to-head meetings this season, the Cyclones and Walleye will play their most crucial game today at the Huntington Center. The Cyclones hold a 2-3-1 record versus the Fish in 2013-13 and will look to extend their buffer in the North Division to eight points.
SCOUTING THE WALLEYE: Nick Vitucci's club dropped a 3-1 decision to Fort Wayne last night, giving them three losses in the last five games. However, they're still one of the hottest second half teams in the ECHL. Willie Coetzee has been atop Toledo's scoring list all year long and currently has 44 points (22 goals, 21 assists) in 47 games. Their captain Kyle Rogers has also been a weapon in the offensive end, posting 32 tallies in 55 contests. Between those two players, they've earned five game-winning goals. Much like the Cyclones, Toledo's strength lies in its defense; they're surrendering just 2.62 goals per game - the third best mark in the league. The Walleye have had a goaltending duo for much of the season; Jordan Pearce has amassed a 14-7-1-1 record with a 2.55 goals-against average while Kent Simpson has gone 14-11-0-3 with a 2.41 GAA. Both backstops rank among the ECHL's top ten in goals-against.
Plenty of Heroes: Cincinnati has had a surplus of players find the game winning goal this season. 20 different Cyclones have notched such a tally. Josh Shalla still leads the team (and ranks second among all ECHL rookies) with six "GWG's."
Staying Clean: Coming into the night, only six other teams have been shorthanded less times than the Cyclones this season. They have had to kill off 223 opponents power plays in 2012-13 - successfully doing so 84.3% of the time (6th best in the ECHL).
Tempo Setters: The Cyclones have scored the first goal of the game 33 times this season - the third most of any team in the ECHL. Not surprisingly, it's one of the more important factors to a win. This season when lighting the lamp first, Cincinnati is 26-5-1-1.
