Thunder Shock Reign

Ontario Reign News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (38-14-3-2), defending Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, fell to the Stockton Thunder (29-22-5-4) by a 4-1 score before a crowd of 5,796 at Stockton Arena on Sunday night, as the Thunder converted on four of six power-play opportunities against the Reign.

Stockton would open the scoring late in the first period when Brandon Davidson scored a power-play goal at 17:27 to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. The Reign's defense was already limited with Brock Sheahan in the penalty box for a holding call, while Matt Clune and Stockton's Colton Hayes were also serving off-setting roughing penalties. Matt Reber and former Reign skater Maxime Boisclair would receive assists on Davidson's goal.

Special teams would again tell the story in the second period, as the Thunder padded their lead with another power-play tally from Ryan Constant off assists from Shawn Weller and Matt Bergland while Brock Sheahan was serving a high-sticking penalty. Ontario spent a total of 5:42 playing down a man during the second period.

Chris Cloud received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at the 20:00 mark of the middle frame after going after Davidson behind the Stockton net in the final seconds of the period. With Cloud in the penalty box at the start of the third, the Thunder capitalized yet again, as Matt Reber's shot clanged off both posts to extend Stockton's lead to three goals.

The Reign broke the shutout at the 12:48 mark of the third when Clune's weak-angle shot from the off-wing popped out in front of Tyler Bunz's glove side, allowing Kyle Kraemer to shovel a rebound past the rookie netminder for the winger's 22nd goal of the season.

Tony DeHart would ultimately cap the scoring late in the third period at 19:19 on a one-timer from inside The left circle off a feed from Davidson after C.J. Stretch was sent off for slashing.

The loss in regulation was Ontario's first since a 4-1 defeat at Alaska on Jan. 11, establishing a new club record for longest road unbeaten streak (6-0-1-0).

With the victory, Stockton became the fourth team in the ECHL to officially clinch a berth in the 2012-13 Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Sergey Kostenko made 18 saves on 22 shots for Ontario in the loss; his third consecutive start in three days. Bunz made 27 saves on 28 shots for Stockton.
