Cyclones Drop 6-4 Decision To Elmira

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Benoit Doucet scored a pair of goals and Pierre-Luc Faubert dished off three assists as the Elmira Jackals snapped the Cincinnati Cyclones win streak at six games in a 6-4 decision on Wednesday night. The loss drops the Cyclones to fourth place in the North Division standings-but leaves them just a point out of second place.

Two of the top defensive teams in terms of allowing shots met Wednesday night at U.S. Bank Arena. While the shot totals were below both teams season averages (Elmira is second in the ECHL allowing 28.1 shots per game and Cincinnati is fourth at 28.5 shots)-the scoring averages went up in the decision. Cincinnati won the shots battle, 25-18, in this contest.

The Cyclones wasted little time in opening the scoring, getting a goal from rookie Jimmy Kilpatrick at 1:03. Kilpatrick's goal was his 18th of the year from Bryan O'Hanley and Ben Gordon had the assists. Elmira leveled the scores when Wes Cunningham collected his eighth goal at 4:51, unassisted. Less than a minute and a half later, at 6:15, Mark Van Guilder netted his twelfth goal of the year from Kilpatrick to restore the lead to Cincinnati. Justin Johnson's goal at 9:43 extended the lead to 3-1. Johnson's ninth goal was assisted by Barret Ehgoetz and T.J. McElroy. It was the 13th time this season that Cincinnati scored three or more goals in a period in 2008-09. At 15:09, Benoit Doucet collected his twelfth goal on the power play to cut the deficit to 3-2. Cunningham and Moises Gutierrez picked up the assists. The shots on goal favored the Cyclones, 9-4, in the opening period.

Elmira scored all three goals in the second period to grab a 5-3 lead. Paul McIlveen's goal 58 seconds into the frame tied the game at three. Shawn Weller's score at 2:06, his first, gave the Jackals the first lead of the night at 4-3. Doucet's second of the night and 13th of the year at 19:11 opened the two goal edge. It was the 13th time this season that Cincinnati surrendered three or more goals in a period. The shots on goal in the period were even at seven apiece in the period.

Cincinnati goaltender Ryan Nie left the game after the second goal of the second period, stopping three of the seven shots he faced. Loic Lacasse entered the game and turned aside three of the four shots he faced in the stanza.

Craig Switzer's goal at 9:59 opened the lead to 6-3. A Ben Gordon goal at 15:38 closed the gap to 4-2, as his eighth goal of the season was assisted by Frederic St. Denis and Kilpatrick. The shots favored Cincinnati, 9-7, in the third period and for the game the Cyclones held the upper hand in shots, 25-18.

Michael Teslak picked up the win for Elmira,stopping 19 shots, while Nie took the loss, his first against six wins for Cincinnati.

The Cyclones are now 22-16-5 on the season, while Elmira is 23-18-4. The Cyclones play at Dayton this weekend, with games at the Nutter Center on Friday and Saturday. Faceoff each night is at 7:30pm.
