Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs put the brakes on a two-game losing streak with a well-played 3-1 win in their first ever game against the Mississippi Sea Wolves on Wednesday night.

The Chiefs are now 24-16-2 and sit four points behind Wheeling for first in the North Division.

The tandem of Petr Pohl and Todd Griffith put on a show in the first half of the second period and staked Johnstown to a 2-0 lead. Pohl extended earned a six-game point streak with his 14th goal 3:44 into the game. Charging in on a 2-on-1, Griffith hit Pohl with a pass from the left wing and it banked off of Pohl's skate past Ryan Munce. Pohl returned the favor to Griffith when he scored his first as a Chief at 10:02. Pohl hit him with a pass from the right wing that Griffith turned underneath the cross bar with a wicked wrist shot. David Schulz also assisted.

Much of the second period went scoreless with a big reason being the play of Munce. Johnstown opened the second outshooting Mississippi 7-0 in the first seven minutes of the period, but Munce was there for the save each time. The Sea Wolves cracked Kris Mayotte at 15:28 when Kyle Peto ripped home a slap shot on a 5-on-3 power play.

Protecting the one-goal lead, Johnstown clamped down defensively and limited the Wolves to just seven shots in the final frame. Mayotte turned aside each one, and Pohl cashed in an unassisted empty net goal with 53 seconds left in the game. The goal was Pohl's third point of the night and gave him nine points in his last six games.

Mayotte turned in 23 saves for his 16th win of the season while the Chiefs' power play went 0-for-5 breaking a two-game streak with a power play goal.
