January 28, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced today that they will hold their third annual "Pink in the Rink" game presented by Hardee's and 107.9 FM on Sunday, Feb. 8 against the Florida Everblades. The game will benefit the American Cancer Society, Carolina Breast Friends and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Charlotte Affiliate.
During the event, the Checkers will don special pink and navy jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds benefiting the aforementioned organizations. The Checkers will also raise money through group-tickets and merchandise sales. To purchase tickets for the event, please visit www.gocheckers.com/fundraisers and click on the Pink in the Rink logo.
In the last two seasons the Checkers have raised over $50,000 for Pink in the Rink related charities and the organization is hoping to top that number this year. "This is one of my favorite events of the year," says checkers COO, Tera Black, "It brings together a fantastic group of women, their families and friends to celebrate the stories of local survivors and to continue the mission of fighting breast cancer."
"We value and appreciate what the Charlotte Checkers organization is doing in partnering with the American Cancer Society and applaud them for joining the fight against cancer," said Stephanie Gray, American Cancer Society distinguished events director. "The American Cancer Society uses the dollars raised through events like Pink in the Rink to fund cancer research, provide up-to-date cancer information, ensure all women have access to cancer screening and treatments - regardless of income - and to provide services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Thank you Charlotte Checkers and to learn more about what the American Cancer Society is doing in the fight against cancer or to get involved, please call 1-800-227-2345 or visit our website at www.cancer.org."
"Carolina Breast Friends is very excited to team up with the Charlotte Checkers for Pink in the Rink for the 3rd consecutive year. We are a group of extraordinary women who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and are determined to make a difference," said Pam Darnell, Carolina Breast Friends membership coordinator. Come out and have a great afternoon with the Checkers and help put CBF closer to its goal of building "Project Pink House" - a Charlotte based location where survivors will gather for meetings and education. The "Pink House" will offer survivors the opportunity to participate in fitness and yoga training, nutritional education, counseling services, wig/scarf boutique, creative workshops and more. It's a "one-stop-shop" for survivors to focus on healing in a positive way, hand-in-hand with others who know what it is like to walk in their shoes. We wish to thank the Checkers and the Charlotte community for their support of CBF and "Project Pink House."
Komen Charlotte executive director, Gloria Scienski said, "Susan G. Komen for the Cure Charlotte Affiliate is pleased to be a part of the Charlotte Checkers' 'Pink In the Rink.' Komen for the Cure's promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. The Charlotte Checkers are joining us to help women and men by raising funds and encouraging the practice of habits that will lead to a healthier tomorrow. By participating in events like 'Pink in the Rink' we are able to share our vision of a world without breast cancer."
