August 23, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters picked up their fourth straight win and three game sweep of the Auburn Doubledays on Sunday night at Falcon Park. The Cutters scored nine runs in the game including five in the first inning to hold off the Doubledays and improve to 39-22 this season. Williamsport holds a 5 1/2 game lead over second place State College with the Spikes win over Batavia.
The Crosscutters had a quick start offensively against Auburn starter Taylor Hearn, who allowed four consecutive Cutters to reach base. Williamsport scored five runs on six hits to take a 5-0 lead and put themselves in the driver's seat. Jose Pujols, Venn Biter and Austin Bossart delivered RBI singles for Williamsport and Luis Espiritu Jr. scored two runs to highlight the inning with a double.
Williamsport would squander a couple of chances to extend their lead in the second and third innings by stranding six runners on base. The Cutters would chase Hearn from the game after loading the bases in the third inning. Auburn would look to their bullpen to get out of the jam as Maximo Valerio took over and would get a pair of flyouts to end the threat.
Leading 5-1 in the top of the fifth inning the Cutters would finally tack on some runs against the Doubledays. Williamsport batted around the lineup scoring four runs on six hits to take a 9-1 lead. Mark Laird delivered the biggest hit of the inning with a two RBI single into left field. Williamsport received five innings of three run baseball from Mitch Gueller. Gueller would exit the game with a 9-3 lead, looking for his eighth win of the season. Williamsport would need every one of their nine runs as Auburn rallied against the bullpen to bring the game to 9-8 heading to the ninth inning. Rob Tasin shut the books on Auburn to end the threat and pick up his 13th save.
