Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - The Doubledays fell to the Crosscutters 9-8 in the series finale. Auburn was down 9-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but their comeback fell short with a runner stranded on second in the ninth.
The slugfest started with one out in the first inning. Taylor Hearn started for the Doubledays and gave up four straight singles to the two through six hitters before recording the second out. Then the seven and eight hitters for Williamsport Austin Bossart and Luis Espiritu hit a single and double respectively for the fifth and sixth hits of the frame. After half an inning, the Doubledays trail 5-0.
An inning and a half later, the Doubledays' offense started to wake up. With one out Darryl Florentino singled up the middle before he advanced to second on an error by the pitcher Mitch Gueller on an errant pickoff throw. Florentino scored two batters later on an RBI double by Jorge Tillero to put the score at 5-1.
After a scoreless third and fourth, both teams really broke out the bats in the fifth. Maximo Valerio was on the hill for Auburn in the top of the inning and struck out the side, but not in order. The righty also gave up five singles, a double, and a total of four runs. Through four and a half, the Crosscutters led 9-1.
The Doubledays comeback started in the bottom of the fifth. Victor Robles and Max Schrock led off with back-to-back singles before they both scored on a triple by Kelvin Gutierrez. The third baseman Gutierrez then scored a batter later when Rhett Wiseman grounded out to second. After five innings, Williamsport led Auburn 9-4.
An inning later in the sixth, the comeback continued. Florentino led off with a single and scored two batters later when Tillero launched a two run blast to left for his first homer of the season. The homer put the score at 9-6 after six.
The seventh inning went by quickly and quietly before the Doubledays continued their comeback in the eighth. With one out, Tillero singled up the middle. He then stole second and scored after Williamsport committed back-to-back errors allowing Schrock and Jake Jefferies to reach base. Schrock then scored on Wiseman's double to left and the Doubledays trailed 9-8 heading into the ninth.
After a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, the second of just two 1-2-3 innings in the entire game, Auburn stepped up to the plate. With two outs, Melvin Rodriguez doubled into right and was replaced by pinch runner Dalton Dulin. Unfortunately for the Doubledays, the comeback ended with Dulin on second when Tillero grounded out to second to end the ballgame.
Taylor Hearn took the loss, his fifth of the season, after the following line: 2.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, and 1 K. Mitch Gueller earned the victory, his eighth, with the following line: 5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, and 3 K's.
