Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
NORWICH, CT --- Ryan Howell had a two-out RBI double in the top of the fifth inning to score Skye Bolt with the only run of the game, while Corey Miller and Ryan Gorton combined on a six-hit shutout as the Vermont Lake Monsters snapped a five-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Connecticut Tigers in game one of a New York-Penn League doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium.
The game was scoreless in the fifth inning when Connecticut starter Spenser Watkins walked Bolt with two outs and Howell followed with a line drive double into the leftfield corner that scored Bolt from first base with the game's only run. The Howell double was one of just three hits for the Lake Monsters, the second straight three-hit game for Vermont and their fifth overall.
Miller (2-2) scattered four hits with three strikeouts over five innings to earn his second win of the season for Vermont. Miller was able to work out of a two on, no out jam in the second inning and a two on, one-out jam in the fourth as the Tigers finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring postion for the game, Gorton allowed a one-out single in the sixth before a leadoff walk and two-out single in the seventh, but struckout Keaton Jones to end the game with the tying run on second base.
The win snapped both a five-game losing streak overall and a five-game road losing streak for Vermont, which had not won since completing a three-game sweep of Connecticut at Centennial Field on August 14th. The victory was the sixth shutout of the season for Lake Monsters pitchers, including the fourth 1-0 win overall and third 1-0 win against the Tigers.
Vermont will go for its first doubleheader sweep of the season and first on the road since August of 2013 as they face Connecticut in the rubber game of the series beginning around 5:45 pm.
