Auburn Doubledays News Release
Tonight's Game: The Doubledays host the Crosscutters for game three of a three- game series. Auburn sends Taylor Hearn to the hill to face Mitch Gueller for Williamsport. Tonight's game is the second game of a five-game home stand.
Last Night's Game: The Doubledays hosted the Crosscutters and fell 9-3. Matthew Crownover was brilliant in five innings of work, but didn't earn a decision. His line: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 3 K's. Crownover also retired the first 12 batters he faced before surrendering two hits in the fifth. The Doubledays and Crosscutters were tied at 2-2 after seven before Williamsport exploded for four in the eighth and three in the ninth.
Bullpen Domination: Auburn's 'pen has been dominant over the course of the season recording a 3.19 ERA (93 ER in 262.1 IP). The starting pitchers haven't been as fortunate recording a 5.02 ERA (131 ER in 235.0 IP). Also of note, the Doubledays have surrendered 125 runs in the first three innings combined (40, 36, and 49 in the first through third respectively). Those 125 runs account for exactly 44% of the runs Auburn's pitching staff has given up this year (283 total).
The Wild Card Chase: With 16 games left in the season, the Doubledays sit 5.5 games back in the wild card race. State College currently leads the wild card chase with the following teams behind them: West Virginia 1.5 GB, Lowell 2.5 GB, Aberdeen 2.5 GB, Connecticut 2.5 GB, Hudson Valley 3.0 GB, Brooklyn 4.0 GB, Auburn 5.5 GB, Mahoning Valley 5.5 GB, Vermont 6.5 GB, and Batavia 7.0 GB.
This Dude is On Fire: Since not playing from July 25th until August 6th, Max Schrock has played in 14 games. In his first game back, the infielder went 0-1 on August 6th. In the 13 games since, he has raised his batting average from .246 to .297.
These Cleats Aren't Made For Walking: Over their last six games, the Doubledays have drawn just six walks, including none in two of those games. This season, Auburn as a whole has drawn 167 walks, tied for the third-fewest in the New York- Penn League with Hudson Valley. Aberdeen has the fewest with just 142.
As Easy As 1-2-3: With four 1-2-3 innings last night (the first, second, third, and fourth), Doubledays starters have thrown eight 1-2-3 innings in their last ten. Grant Borne worked four two nights ago and Matthew Crownover added four more last night.
Starting to Turn Around: Since starting the season slowly, the Doubledays' starting rotation has started to turn things around. An Auburn starter has not given up more than three earned runs in a start in the last 10 games. The last time a 'Days starting pitcher gave up more than three earned runs was back on August 9th when Grant Borne surrendered four earned runs in 4.2 IP.
The Season Series: With last night's loss, Williamsport clinched the season series against Auburn. The Doubledays have lost the season series with the Crosscutters and Black Bears, but lead the series against the Spikes, Scrappers, and Muckdogs.
