Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (28-29) dropped the first game of a double header with the Vermont Lake Monsters (26-33) by a score of 1-0. The win snapped a five game losing streak for Vermont and it was also the third time the Lake Monsters won a game 1-0 over Connecticut this year.
It was a pitchers duel from the start and the score remained scoreless until the top of the fifth. Spenser Watkins (4-4) started the game for Connecticut and retired the first two in the fifth. However, he issued a two out walk to designated hitter Skye Bolt and the next batter third basemen Ryan Howell doubled to left scoring Bolt from first.
That run would prove to be the only run Vermont needed in the game. Corey Miller (2-2) making just his second start of the year was very good over his five innings of work as he allowed just four hits and struck out three. Ryan Gorton (SV 3) worked the final two innings striking out four and giving up just one hit.
Connecticut had chances in the game as they left eight runners on base including four in scoring position. The Tigers had two runners on in the seventh including the lead off man but failed to score. First basemen Will Allen picked up another two hits going 2-3.
Watkins lost a 1-0 decision to Vermont for his second straight start as he worked six innings surrendering just the one run and three hits. He struck out five and walked one. Jack Fischer pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Connecticut will play the first of a three game series on the road against Tri-City on Monday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid June through early September. 2015 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale!
