GENEVA, Ill. - Third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert hit a tie-breaking grand slam in the second inning on Sunday afternoon, propelling the Kane County Cougars to a 7-5 victory over the Burlington Bees at Elfstrom Stadium. The victory gave the Cougars the series -- their fifth series win out of six in the 2nd Half -- and a chance for a sweep Monday night. They remain in sole possession of first place in the Western Division.

Both teams scored in each of the first two innings, and the Cougars scored all seven of their runs for the game in that span. Brian Fletcher and Cuthbert nailed consecutive two-out run-scoring hits in the first off Nate Long (5-3) to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead, and after starter Jason Adam gave up two in the top of the second, the Cougars put up five more to regain command. Kevin David scored on a double play, and Cuthbert launched a grand slam, the third by a Cougar this season.

Adam (3-4) earned his first win since May 28. He gave up four runs on seven hits, walked two and fanned seven in the victory. Santiago Garrido handled the next three innings and gave up one run, and Chas Byrne logged a run-free ninth to move to 7-for-7 in save opportunities.

The Cougars (12-5, 40-46) and Bees (6-11, 51-36) conclude the three-game series Monday night at 6:30 CT. Leonel Santiago (6-6, 3.01) is scheduled to face Josh Bowman (6-2, 3.11). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 6:15 p.m.
