Peoria scores in the 10th to beat Kernels, 3-2

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs scored an unearned run in the 10th inning and went on to edge the Kernels 3-2 at Perfect Game Field on Saturday evening. With the game tied 2-2 in the 10th inning, Micah Gibbs led off the inning with a single. He reached 2nd base on a passed ball and went to 3rd base on an infield groundout. With two outs in the inning Rubi Silva reached on an infield single, allowing Gibbs to score and give Peoria a 3-2 lead.

Daniel Tillman (4-3) took the loss in one inning of work out of the bullpen. He allowed one unearned run on one hit while striking out one. Yohan Gonzalez (3-3) picked up the win in relief for Peoria. He went 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out four.

The game was scoreless through six innings as Heath Nichols for the Kernels and Austin Kirk for the Chiefs held the offenses in check. In the 7th inning, the Chiefs scored twice to take a 2-0 lead on a two run homer to right center by Richard Jones. Nichols went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one.

The Kernels evened the score 2-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning. Brandon Decker began the inning with a double. He scored on a RBI single by Jean Almanzar, making the score 2-1. Almanzar reached 2nd base on a wild pitch and advanced to 3rd base on a fielder's choice. With two outs Rolando Gomez reached 1st base on a throwing error by Peoria 3rd baseman Brandon May, allowing Almanzar to score and tie the game. Jeremy Cruz led the Kernels offensively, going 3-5. Decker went 2-4. Almanzar went 1-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

The Kernels continue the series with Peoria on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Kids Eat Free at the ballpark. That's right, the first 1,000 kids 12 and under receive a coupon for a free hot dog, soda and popcorn from the special concession stands on the concourse. The Kernels will be wearing special jerseys to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Veterans Memorial Stadium that will be sold during the game via a silent auction with the proceeds to benefit the Kernels Foundation. And, it's a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Day where fans can get autographs from the Kernels before the game, play Travel Advisors Baseball Vacation Bingo during the game, enjoy face painters Funny Face Designs by Lori and storybook princess Belle, presented by Glass Slipper Entertainment on the concourse during the game, and run the bases and play catch in the outfield after the game, thanks to Wickwire Chiropractic and Wellness Center. The Kernels welcome guests from UNI, and the communities of Washington and Anamosa to the game. Gates open at 1:00 p.m.
