Clinton LumberKings News Release
Beloit, WI - Beloit right-hander Manuel Soliman scattered seven hits across 7.0 scoreless innings and the Snappers put together a four-run fourth inning against Clinton right-hander George Mieses as they won 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field.
Soliman (W, 4-5) encountered trouble in the first inning as Mickey Wiswall singled to left-center with two outs and Stefen Romero lined a single down the left-field line, but Romero was thrown out digging for second by left-fielder Wang-Wei Lin, abruptly ending the scoring chance. An inning later, Kalian Sams and John Hicks reached on consecutive two-out singles, but Soliman retired Robbie Anston and Anthony Phillips on fly-outs to end the inning.
Mieses worked to the minimum with just one hit allowed over his first three innings, then had two tough breaks that opened up the door for the Snappers. Lin drew a leadoff walk and Daniel Santana popped up a bunt, but Mieses couldn't make the tough catch sliding on the first-base line. With runners at first and second, Jairo Perez chopped a ball towards Jetsy Extrano at third base, but it took a high hop over his head to score Lin.
Daniel Ortiz added a sacrifice fly in that same inning and Lance Ray worked the count to 3-1, then destroyed a Mieses pitch to deep right field for a two-run home run. Ray's eighth clout of the season raised the Beloit lead to 4-0.
Mieses (L, 3-10) allowed those four runs on six hits over 6.0 innings, walking two and striking out two. Right-hander Tyler Blandford yielded another run in the seventh and right-hander Keli'i Zablan fired a scoreless eighth.
Handcuffed by Soliman over the first seven innings, the LumberKings found similar difficulty facing left-hander Nelvin Fuentes. Fuentes retired the final six batters in order to end the game.
Wiswall and Romero each finished 2-for-4, but neither could put a run on the board as the LumberKings were shut out for the ninth time this season. The loss also snapped Clinton's three-game winning streak.
Perez finished 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI while Ray went 1-for-3 with the blast and two RBI. Beloit's win moves them back into a two-way tie with the LumberKings for second place in the West, 2.0 games behind first-place Kane County (12-5).
The LumberKings (10-7) and Snappers (10-7) close out the series with the rubber match tomorrow night at Pohlman Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Left-hander Anthony Fernandez (2-2, 3.63) gets the start for Clinton as Beloit counters with right-hander A.J. Achter (2-1, 4.12).
