Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Center fielder Andy Vasquez homered and drove in two runs on Thursday night, but the Altoona Curve lost to the Trenton Thunder, 6-4, at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Three errors by the Curve (69-62) led to two unearned runs for the Thunder (68-62).
Trenton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning against Curve starter Jason Creasy (Loss, 10-8). After an unearned run in the first inning, Cito Culver hit a two-run triple to put Trenton ahead, 3-0, in the third.
Trenton padded to their lead in the fourth inning with consecutive RBIs by Mark Payton and Dante Bichette Jr to stretch the lead to 5-0.
A sacrifice fly by Vasquez against Thunder starter Cale Coshow (Win, 2-1) put the Curve on the board in the third. Two batters later, an RBI single by Adam Frazier closed the gap to 5-2.
Altoona grabbed a run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jose Osuna.
Vasquez's solo homer in the sixth closed the deficit to 5-4.
Thunder reliever Mark Montgomery (Save, 15) pitched a scoreless ninth, working around a walk to preserve the Trenton win.
Curve reliever John Kuchno pitched 3.2 innings without allowing a run, working around three hits.
The Curve had their advantage over the third-place Akron RubberDucks trimmed to one game for the second and final postseason spot in the Western Division.
The Curve and the Thunder continue the four-game set on Friday night at PNG Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Righty Chad Kuhl (10-4, 2.50) makes his 24th start for the Curve. Right-hander Jaron Long (3-5, 3.42) will be on the bump for the Thunder.
