Altoona Curve News Release
READING, Pa. - The Altoona Curve and the Reading Phillies split the results on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium as the Curve took the first game, a continuation from Saturday, by the score of 13-4 and the Phillies won the second game, a seven-inning contest, by the score of 2-1.
After a rain delay of one hour and seven minutes, in the first inning of game one on Saturday night, off J.C. Ramirez (5-5), Anthony Norman led the game off with a triple, followed by a double by Starling Marte. At that point the Curve led 1-0 and would extend the lead to 3-0 after a walk, a single and a two-run single by Jeremy Farrell. With two down and the bases loaded, Curve pitcher Aaron Pribanic singled through the right side to make it 4-0 and a bases loaded walk made it 5-0 after one.
The Curve piled on two more runs in the second on a double by Matt Curry and an RBI single by Greg Picart and added four more runs in the rain in the third to extend their advantage to 11-1, after the Phillies scored a run off Pribanic on an RBI groundout in the second.
All told, the Curve had 11 hits through three innings on Saturday with each member of the team having at least one hit and at least a run scored or an RBI before rain suspended play.
The game was picked up on Sunday in the bottom of the third as Matt McSwain came on to pitch for the Curve and McSwain (1-0) would pitch extremely well. He went five innings and allowed only two solo home runs, one to Freddy Galvis and one to Derrick Mitchell. He picked up the win, the first of his season.
Chris Kissock took over for the Phillies and he pitched well also, saving the Phillies bullpen that saw their starting pitcher go less than an inning.
In game two, the Curve shot out to a lead on starter Tyler Cloyd as Marte singled with one down and Jordy Mercer doubled him in down the line in left.
Jeff Locke started for the Curve and tossed two scoreless to start the game before Galvis hit his second home run of the day, one from each side of the plate, and tied the game up at one.
The game would stay tied at one through both of the starters' outings on the day. Both Locke and Cloyd allowed one earned run in five innings on six hits. Locke struck out four and Cloyd struck out seven batters.
In the sixth, Les Walrond (1-0) fired a scoreless inning, but Donnie Veal (0-1) in the bottom half of the inning, allowed a solo home run with two down to Terry Evans to break the 1-1 tie. Justin De Fratus earned his seventh save of the season as worked out of a leadoff walk in the seventh and final inning.
The Phillies took two-of-three from the Curve to boost their record to six games above .500 and the Curve are back even at 31-31 on the year.
With the short three-game road trip over, the Curve will have an off day on Monday before beginning a seven-game homestand on Tuesday in Altoona, Pa. Tuesday's game will be a Two-for-Tuesday presented by Atlantic Broadband and KRAFT with two-for-one offers on tickets, hot dogs and small popcorn.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. with gates to Blair County Ballpark opening at 6 p.m. Great seats for the ballgame are still available by calling the Curve at 877.99.CURVE or by visiting the official website of the Curve www.AltoonaCurve.com . Pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network will begin at 6:30 p.m.
