Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(Reading, PA) -- Reading right fielder Terry Evans launched a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth inning - of a seven-inning game, and Reading went on to beat Altoona 2-1 on Sunday in the originally scheduled contest at FirstEnergy Stadium. The win, followed the completion of Saturday's suspended affair, which ended with a 13-4 Curve win.
Signed as a free agent by Philadelphia and added to Reading's roster on June 1, Evans, 29, stepped to the plate with the game tied 1-1 and two outs. Evans, who began the season with Fresno (AAA), would only need to see one pitch from Altoona reliever Donnie Veal (0-1, 12.00) to make a difference. The Georgia native launched the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to give Reading the 2-1 lead, and ultimately the victory. The blast was his second of the season for Reading.
In the top of the seventh, reliever Justin De Fratus came on to close things. After allowing a leadoff walk, De Fratus would get Brock Holt to fly out and end the ballgame. De Fratus, a member of Philadelphia's 40-man roster, notched his team-high seventh save of the season.
The win for Reading went to LHP Les Walrond (1-0, 4.50), who tossed a scoreless sixth frame. Walrond, who was brought back to the Phillies organization just 10 days ago, walked one and fanned one. The Muskogee, OK native last played in the Phils' organization in 2008, when he split the season between Lehigh Valley (AAA) and Philadelphia.
Reading's first run of the game came off the bat of Freddy Galvis, who hit his sixth home run of the season - a career-high. Galvis homered twice, as his first home run on Sunday came during the suspended game. That home run will be reflected on Saturday's game.
R-Phils fans that came out to the game were treated to "extra" baseball, courtesy of the rain on Saturday. Sunday afternoon started-off with the R-Phils in the bottom of the third inning of Saturday's suspended game, and when the game resumed, Reading was trailing Altoona 11-1. Reading would add three runs along the way, but end up dropping their second-straight game to Altoona when it was all said and done.
After Reading dropped the completion of Saturday's game, they sent RHP Tyler Cloyd to the hill with hopes of salvaging the series against Altoona. Cloyd, a natve of Bellevue, ME, was solid, as he tossed five innings of six-hit, one-run ball. He did not factor in the decision.
RHP J.C. Ramirez (5-5, 4.30) was the losing pitcher of Saturday's game. He started and allowed five runs over just 0.2 innings. He was saddled with his second-straight loss and third over his last four games.
Reading (34-28) will now have an off day on Monday, before beginning a three-game series with the Bowie Baysox in Bowie, MD on Tuesday. RHP Austin Hyatt (6-3, 4.03) gets the nod for Reading on Tuesday. Bowie will counter with LHP Rick Zangone (2-4, 4.53).
Phillers... The R-Phils went 4-3 on the seven-game homestand... Chris Kissock started the completion of Saturday's game on Sunday... Kissock allowed two unearned runs on two hits over five innings... Tyson Brummett allowed six runs (four earned) on Saturday in relief of Ramirez... The R-Phils had three stolen bases in Sunday's originally scheduled game... Spidale added his team-high ninth stolen base of the season... Paco Figueroa had two hits in that game... Reading returns to FirstEnergy Stadium on Friday, June 17 for a seven-game homestand.
