Iowa Cubs News Release

Jay Jackson pitched six shutout innings for Iowa as the Cubs defeated New Orleans 4-2 Saturday night in front of 12,603 fans at Principal Park. With the win, Iowa has now won four of its last five and moves to 48-41 on the season.

Jackson (5-6, 3.64) scattered four hits over six innings, walked one and struck out five to earn the win. Through his six innings, Jackson never allowed more than one Zephyrs' baserunner to reach. It was also his second start this season in which he did not allow a run to score.

The Cubs' offense provided good run-support to back Jackson and the Cubs' starter helped his own cause by scoring Iowa's first run.

Up first in the bottom of the third, Zephyrs' starter Brian Lawrence hit Jackson with a pitch. Jim Adduci followed with a single and Darwin Barney moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Brad Snyder came through with an RBI-groundout to put the Cubs on top 1-0. Snyder also hit a single in the first frame to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

Iowa got on the board again in the sixth inning as Bobby Scales delivered an RBI-single to plate Darwin Barney with runners on the corners. After Bryan LaHair served a single through the infield to load the bases, Welington Castillo hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 3-0 in favor of Iowa.

Micah Hoffpauir delivered an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, singling home Darwin Barney for a 4-0 lead. Hoffpauir finished the game going 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored.

Lawrence (8-6, 3.87) was tagged with loss despite giving New Orleans a quality start.

The Zephyrs scored two in the ninth as reliever Jeff Samardzija gave up three walks and a single. Scott Maine entered the game with one out and after issuing a walk, retired the final two Zephyrs to record his second save of the season.

The Cubs and Zephyrs will wrap up the season series tomorrow at Principal Park. The Cubs have guaranteed winning the series and hold a 9-6 edge. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. and will see Cubs' all-star RH Thomas Diamond (5-3, 2.96) oppose RH Chris Volstad (0-0, 0.00).
