Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Sky Sox took a nail-biter on Friday at Security Service Field, topping the Reno Aces, 9-7, in a game that featured three lead changes between the fifth and seventh innings.
The Sky Sox took control early in this one, plating three runs in the third. Leading off with two ground outs, the Sox put together a furious rally. Omar Quintanilla kicked the action off with a somewhat innocuous base hit, while Chris Nelson followed suit with a single to left. Matt Miller would connect for a two-run double in the next at-bat, 2-0, while Travis Metcalf would bat Miller in with a double of his own; 3-0.
Reno would battle back, however, plating two runs in the fourth before taking the lead with another two run frame in the top of the fifth; 4-3.
But the Sky Sox were resilient tonight, exploding in the bottom half of the frame with four runs. Quintanilla jump started the surge again, singling to center to lead off the frame. Chris Nelson promptly launched a bomb off the top of the scoreboard in left, plating two to give the Sox a 4-2 lead. Matt Miller and Travis Metcalf would be retired in the next two at-bats, setting the stage for another two-out rally. With Mike Paulk contributing a base hit to center, Michael McKenry hit his fifth home run of the season - a laser shot to left that gave the Sky Sox a 7-4 advantage.
Reno's offense wouldn't quit, however, scoring two runs in the sixth for the third consecutive inning, 7-6, before tying it up on a John Hester solo shot in the seventh; 7-7.
But the Sky Sox had one last bit of magic left in their bats, stringing together two doubles and a single to go up 9-7 in the inning's bottom half. Mike Paulk's RBI double proved to be the game-winner, plating Matt Miller from first with two outs for the go-ahead eighth run.
Matt Reynolds would come on in relief in the eighth to protect the club's two-run lead, tossing two scoreless innings to seal the victory.
With the win, the Sky Sox improve to 39-48 while Reno falls to 36-52.
The two teams will face off in a double header tomorrow with first pitch of game one scheduled for 5:00 pm.
