
Cubs defeat RedHawks

Iowa Cubs News Release
The Iowa Cubs defeated the Oklahoma City RedHawks 4-2 in front of 10,493 fans Friday night at Principal Park.
Darwin Barney singled to start the Cubs' two-out rally in the second inning. Barney stole second base and Andres Blanco walked before Nate Spears reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. With John- Ford Griffin batting, Barney scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.
Iowa extended its lead in the third inning when Brad Snyder hit a solo home run, his 14th of the year. Matt Craig then doubled and advanced to third base on Matt Camp's ground out. Craig scored on Barney's second hit of the night, a single, to up the Cubsâ lead 3-0. Barney was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Craig and Griffin also collected two hits for Iowa.
One of Craig's two hits was an eighth inning homer that extended Iowa's lead, 4-0.
Jeff Samardzija and Jeff Stevens held the RedHawks to three hits and eight scoreless innings. Oklahoma City scored its only two runs in the ninth inning off reliever Greg Reinhard. Justin Smoak hit a two- out home run to center field to spoil the shutout for the 4-2 final.
Iowa pitchers combined to strikeout 10 RedHawks. Samardzija (6-4) picked up the win striking out six, while allowing three hits in six innings of work. Oklahoma City's Bryan Corey (6-8) was tagged with the loss allowing three runs on six hits in four innings pitched. Iowa's Stevens threw two scoreless innings, striking out three.
The Cubs and RedHawks play Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Principal Park.
