Reno Aces News Release
LAS VEGAS, Nev.-Daniel Cabrera had his best start as a Reno Ace, throwing 4.2 innings of shutout ball, and the Aces bullpen capped-off a shutout victory over the Las Vegas 51s, 6-0, Friday night at Cashman Field.
On a night where the game time temperature was 107 degrees, tempers flared as well, with the benches clearing in the top half of the sixth inning. After Eric Byrnes and Chris Young led off the frame with back-to-back homers, Las Vegas starter Davis Romero's next pitch sailed near the head of Aces first baseman Josh Whitesell, inciting both benches to clear. No punches were thrown, but Romero was ejected and the Aces rolled to their seventh victory against Las Vegas, tying the season series and the Silver State Diamond Challenge with only two games remaining.
While Aces starter Cabrera did not qualify for the victory, he did throw 4.2 shutout innings while allowing only two hits. Scott Maine (1-2) earned his first career Triple-A victory, and Daniel Schlereth made his Triple-A debut by throwing a scoreless seventh inning. Scott Dohmann tossed the final two frames to preserve the shutout.
Davis Romero (3-5) took the loss for the 51s, allowing three runs over five innings before being ejected.
Offensively for Reno, Whitesell led the way with a 2-for-2, 3 RBI night. Byrnes and Luke Carlin also added multi-hit games for the Aces.
Reno's victory ensures that the inaugural Silver State Diamond Challenge will be decided by the final two games of the season series between Nevada's two Triple-A teams. Saturday evening's matchup will be the 15th of 16 SSDC games, with the series tied at seven games each. Reno will send Hector Ambriz (7-9, 5.85 ERA) to the hill against Las Vegas RHP T.J. Beam (7-3, 4.86 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT, and can be heard live on Fox Sports Radio 1450.
Reno returns home for its final homestand Monday, Aug. 31. For tickets, stop by the Aces Ballpark Box Office, call 334-7000 or visit RenoAces.com.
