Iowa Cubs News Release

Salt Lake City, UT - The Iowa Cubs (58-68) got plenty of early offense and good work from the bullpen to beat the Salt Lake Bees (57-69) 8-7 tonight at Spring Mobile Ballpark. The Cubs have won the first three games of this series to match their longest road winning streak of the season.

Bees' starter Matt Oye (0-1) was making his Triple-A debut tonight and the Cubs jumped on him quickly. Brett Jackson led off the first inning with a double. After a sacrifice bunt by Marwin Gonzalez, Lou Montanez drew a walk. Bryan LaHair, Scott Moore, and D.J. LeMahieu followed with RBI singles and Matt Spencer finished the four-run rally with a sacrifice fly. The Cubs extended their lead to 6-0 in the top of the third inning on a two-run single by Ryan Flaherty.

The Bees got things going against Cubs' starter Alberto Cabrera in the bottom of the third. The Bees sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs on three hits while taking advantage of three walks in the frame. Jeff Baisley's two-run single was the key hit in the inning.

An RBI double by Gonzalez chased Oye from the game in the fourth inning after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings. Jeremy Berg took over and gave the Bees a solid effort in relief. He allowed one run over 3.2 innings. The run came on a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez in the sixth.

The Bees came back against Cabrera in the fifth inning. Efren Navarro had a sacrifice fly and Jeremy Moore an RBI single to cut the Cubs' lead to 7-5. After a walk to Gil Velzquez put the tying runs on base, Robert Coello came in and struck out Kevin Richardson and Freddy Sandoval to preserve the lead. Coello (6-6) was perfect over 2.2 innings in relief and earned the win.

The Bees got within one in the eighth when Sandoval homered off Justin Berg, but John Gaub struck out two in a scoreless ninth to preserve the win and earn his seventh save of the season.

The Cubs and Bees continue this series tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m Central time. LH Chris Rusin (2-2, 3.47) will start for the Cubs against LH Barrett Browning (2-1, 4.70) for the Bees. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 7:45.
