Layne, Berroa Guide Aces to 5-3 Victory

OKLAHOMA CITY-Tom Layne came out of the bullpen in relief of injured starter Barry Enright and held Oklahoma City to just a run over five innings Friday night, lifting the Reno Aces to a 5-3 victory over the RedHawks in the series finale at RedHawks Field at Bricktown.

Enright was removed from the game in the second inning after colliding with catcher Konrad Schmidt while attempting to field a bunt. Layne came on and held the RedHawks down, while the Aces offense rallied from an early deficit to take a sixth-inning lead it would not let slip away.

Angel Berroa hit a game-tying two-run triple in the fourth, homered in the sixth, then scored an important insurance run in the eighth after his second triple of the game.

The win for Reno snaps a five-game losing skid and prevents a series sweep. The first-place Aces now return home for a crucial four-game series against the Tacoma Rainiers with first place in the division and a postseason berth on the line.

Layne (9-6) earned the victory, scattering a run on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts. After Layne's exit, Kam Mickolio collected a hold, and Ryan Cook slammed the door on his third save.

Tacoma starter Ryan Rowland-Smith (2-8) was pinned with the loss, surrendering four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts over six frames.

At the plate for Reno, Berroa registered a 3-for-4 night with three RBIs and two runs scored. Cole Gillespie also finished with three hits and a home run.

The Aces return home on Saturday night to begin a four-game series with the Tacoma Rainiers, who currently are battling with Reno for the division lead. In the opener, RHP Kevin Mulvey (3-7, 6.97 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while the Rainiers will counter with RHP Erasmo Ramirez (3-0, 3.26 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
