New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Metairie, LA - The Florida Marlins optioned outfielder Chris Coghlan to New Orleans on Friday, and the 2009 National League Rookie of the Year is expected to join the Zephyrs this weekend when the club travels to Round Rock.
Coghlan hit .344 in 25 games for the Zephyrs in 2009 before being promoted to Florida. He went on to hit .321, sixth-best in the NL and the highest mark ever for a Marlins rookie, with nine home runs and 47 RBI in 128 games. He collected 47 hits in both August and September, becoming the first National League player to amass 94 hits in a two-month span since 1978.
A supplemental first round pick (36th overall) by the Marlins in 2006 out of the University of Mississippi, Coghlan had his 2010 season cut short by a meniscus tear in his left knee in July, and has been battling knee injuries throughout 2011. He batted .343 during a 10-game rehabilitation stint with Class A Jupiter before being optioned to the Zephyrs.
The Zephyrs conclude their series against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Friday night at 7 p.m. Following a four-game series in Round Rock, the Zephyrs return home to open the final homestand of the 2011 season on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the Omaha Storm Chasers.
