Cruthers OT Goal Lifts Solar Bears to 2-1 Win over Florida

Estero, FL - G John Curry made 27 saves to set the stage for an overtime goal by C Ryan Cruthers as the Solar Bears closed out a six-game road trip with a 2-1 win over the Florida Everblades at the Germain Arena on Saturday night. [image: John Curry]

Late in the first period, the Everblades struck for the game's first goal. A shot from D Ryan O'Byrne was stopped by Curry, but C David Rutherford collected the rebound and snapped a shot into the back of the net with 1:51 left in the frame. Florida skated into the first intermission with the 1-0 lead.

With 10:20 left in the second period, the Solar Bears knotted the game up at one apiece. D Bryce Lampman blasted a shot on goal from the neutral zone, catching G Rob Madore off-guard. F Michael Neal collected the rebound and found C Mathew Sisca open on the left wing and he flipped a shot into the back of the net to lock the game in a 1-1 score. It was the only goal of the middle stanza, as the two sides skated to a 1-1 tie after two periods of play.

After neither side was able to strike in the third period, Cruthers played the hero in overtime. With 1:23 left in the extra frame, Cruthers teed up a shot from the high-slot and drove the puck past Madore into the bottom right corner of the goal to lift Orlando to a 2-1 victory over the Everblades.
