Lake Erie Crushers News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Andrew Davis and Jason Taylor both homered for the Crushers at Consol Energy Park on Sunday evening, but the long balls were not enough for the Crushers as they lost their second straight one run game, falling to the Washington Wild Things, 6-5.
The loss for the Crushers, (22-28) was their fourth in their last five games, and dropped their record to 6-11 in one run games this season. The victory for the Wild Things (21-28) marked their ninth victory in one run affairs this season.
The two teams were rendered scoreless through the first two and a half innings. Kevyn Feiner singled with one out, and made his way to second on a groundout. He then stole third, and on Kyle Shaffer's attempt to throw him out, the throw went into left field, allowing Feiner to score.
Lake Erie's first four hits came with two outs, before Jereme Milons and Andrew Davis stroked back to back singles to start the top of the sixth inning. Kellen Kulbacki then hit a groundball to second baseman Scott Lawson. Lawson stepped on second to retire Davis, but his throw to first was wild, bringing Doug Thennis off the bag, and allowed Milons to score. Two batters later, Jason Taylor smashed his first homerun of the season, a two-run shot to give the Crushers a 3-1 lead.
Washington responded quickly and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Thennis stroked a one out single and moved to second when Tim Battle walked. Eric Stephens then reached on T.J. Baumet's error at second, and Blake Ochoa followed with a grand slam off of Kelyn Schellenberg.
Davis struck again for the Crushers in the eighth. Milons began the inning with a walk, before Davis smashed his third hit of the game, a towering two-run homer to right center field, his seventh of the season to tie the game at 5-5.
Ochoa came back to bite the Crushers again. Stephens began the eighth inning with a double off Chris Allen (1-2), and Ochoa dribbled a single down the right field line which scored Stephens to give the Wild Things the lead for good.
The Crushers put a threat together in the top of the ninth. Chris Luick delivered a clutch two out pinch hit single to left, and Robby Kuzdale followed with a single to center field. Milons then walked to load the bases for Davis, and Davis ended the game with a groundout.
The victory went to Sheffield Lake, Ohio, native, Steve Grife (1-0) who pitched in the eighth inning, allowing a pair of runs on a hit. Taylor Wulf (5) recorded his second consecutive save, while Allen suffered the loss after surrendering the winning run in the eighth.
Davis recorded his second consecutive three hit game, going 3-for-5, and was a double short of the cycle. By doing so, he extended his on base streak to 21 games. Taylor delivered Lake Erie's other multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double and a homerun.
The Crushers will begin a three game series against the Rockford Riverhawks at All Pro Freight Stadium on Monday night. Left hander Andrew Weeks (3-3, 4.93) will start for the Crushers and the Riverhawks will counter with right hander Guido Fonseca (3-2, 4.50). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
