Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA-Blake Ochoa's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in Eric Stephens, who doubled to lead off the inning, to propel the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, over the Lake Erie Crushers, 6-5.
The Wild Things scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. While right fielder Luis Rivera was at the plate, shortstop Kevyn Feiner stole third base and upon sliding into the base, Crushers catcher Kyle Shaffer overthrew third baseman Andrew Davis, enabling Feiner to run to home and score.
After Lake Erie scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead, Washington stormed back in the bottom of the same inning to take back the lead. First baseman Doug Thennis singled and then stole second before left fielder Tim Battle was walked. Pinch hitter Eric Stephens then reached first base on an error before Ochoa hit a grand slam over the left-center field wall.
The Crushers tied the game in the top of the eighth inning on a two-run home run by Davis. Ochoa responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to put the Wild Things ahead. The Wild Things catcher went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run and five RBIs.
Lake Erie starter Randy Sturgill (3-0) pitched four innings, allowing one run on five hits, with one walk and three strikeouts. Reliever Chris Allen (1-2) took the loss, pitching one inning and allowing one run (earned) on two hits.
Washington starting pitcher Justin Hall (4-4) lasted seven innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits, with one strikeout and no walks. Steven Grife (1-0) earned his first win for the Wild Things, pitching one inning and allowing two runs (both earned) on one hit.
The Wild Things return home on Sunday, July 24th, for a six-game home stand against the Lake Erie Crushers and the Rockford RiverHawks. Sunday's game is Family Fun Day presented by Chesapeake Energy and Kidney Awareness Day presented by DCI Inc.
