TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums hit three sacrifice flies and used a team effort to defeat the Windy City Thunderbolts in front of 3,715 fans at Wuerfel Park by a score of 6-2.
Beach Bums relief pitcher Scott Dunn (3-2) picked up his first win after pitching 4.1 scoreless innings for Traverse City. Windy City starting pitcher John Mincone (0-2) lasted only a third of an inning in suffering the loss, his second of the season. Dunn currently has a 21 game scoreless innings streak, tying reliever Scott Reid for the longest of the season for a Traverse City pitcher.
The Beach Bums struck first with two runs in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly by left fielder J.T. Hall and an RBI-double by designated hitter Chase Burch to give Traverse City a 2-0 lead. The club would add on single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. Two more sacrifice flies from Burch and catcher John Parham helped stake the Beach Bums to a 5-2 lead.
In the sixth, Burch reached with his second base hit of the ballgame. Vargas then followed with his second double of the contest, a ground-rule double to left field to score Burch and give the Beach Bums a 6-2 lead to end the scoring in the contest.
The victory propels the Beach Bums into a second-place tie with Windy City as each team holds a 27-24 record after the contest. The Beach Bums are three games over .500, the most the club has been over this season.
