SAUGET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies scored in each of the final five innings and hammered the Florence Freedom 10-5 in the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at GCS Ballpark. The win was the second in a row for Gateway and gave them their second consecutive series win.
The Freedom took a 2-0 lead in the fourth off of Gateway starter Ryan Juarez, who was making just his second start and third appearance of his pro career. Juan Valdez provided the runs for Florence with a two-out two-run single.
The Grizzlies answered right back with a four-run fourth inning. Logan Parker walked, Charlie Lisk singled and Brandon Peters reached on an error at first that allowed Parker to come around to score. Nick Farnsworth then hit a three-run homer to right field, his second homer in as many days to make it 4-2 Gateway.
The Grizzlies added a run in the fifth on no hits. Brian Harris reached on a hit by pitch and Parker walked. The two players performed a double steal and Harris came in to score on a Lisk sacrifice fly.
The Freedom cut into the Gateway lead in the sixth with a two-run Jonathan Smith homer, his first in professional baseball.
Landon Hernandez made it 8-4 Gateway in the sixth with his sixth homer of the season, a three-run shot. The homer for Hernandez was his first since June 7th.
Gateway tacked on one more run each in the seventh and eighth innings.
