Normal CornBelters News Release
A short three-game road trip ended on a high note for the Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, thanks to an 11-2 win via 14 hits on Sunday afternoon over the Evansville Otters at Bosse Field in Evansville, Indiana.
The CornBelters reached Evansville starter Kyle Eastham early, as Alvaro Ramirez led off the game with a single followed by a one-out walk to Frank Martinez. Both scored on Steve Alexander's 12th double of the season to the left-center wall to give the Belters a quick 2-0 lead.
The Belters made it 3-0 in the fourth when Daniel Cox reached on an error to lead off the frame, went to third on a double by Mike Mobbs and scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Keeble.
The Otters threatened in the fourth when a base hit, a walk and an error loaded the bases, but Normal starter Matt Mossey got Joe Spiers to foul out to end the inning and strand the bases full.
Normal tacked on three runs in the fifth after two were out to increase the lead to 6-0. Steve Alexander was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a walk to Asif Shah. Daniel Cox singled in Alexander, and Shah and Cox came home on a wild throw on Mike Mobbs' ground ball.
Evansville finally reach Mossey in the fifth with two outs, when Jamar Walton doubled and trotted home on Mike Durant's line drive home run to left to cut the Belters lead to 6-2.
The CornBelters pushed the lead to 8-2 in the seventh when Brandon Newton led off with a single followed by the ninth home run of the season from Frank Martinez over the right-field wall. Tyler Keeble made it 9-2 later in the frame with a two-out double to left to score Steve Alexander.
The Belters kept the offense rolling in the eighth. Newton again led off with a base hit and went to third on a Frank Martinez double, followed by an Asif Shah single to score both Newton and Martinez to pump the lead up to 11-2.
Matt Mossey picked up the win in his first appearance. Otters starter Ryan Eastham took the loss to fall to 0-3.
The CornBelters begin a six-game homestand on Monday, starting with a three-game series against the West Division-leading River City Rascals. Tyler Lavigne (3-6, 2.86) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Belters. First pitch is 7 p.m. with 6:50 pre-game on WEZC-FM 95.9 and WJBC.com.
