Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers used a seven-run third inning to take command of their game with the Washington Wild Things, then held on at the end for an 8-7 victory at All Pro Freight Stadium. The victory against Washington snapped a three game losing streak for the Crushers.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Lake Erie's offense would finally spring to life in the third on a Jodam Rivera RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Luke Hetherington to tie the game and send Wild Things starter Zach Pitts to the showers. But with the bases still loaded and no one out, Gordon Gronkowski delivered a three run double to give the Crushers a 5-2 lead. Andrew Davis followed with an RBI single and Wayne Bond concluded the scoring with a sacrifice fly to give Lake Erie a 7-2 advantage after three.
"It's always great when you can come through in that situation," said Gronkowski. "Anytime you can stick it someone's neck like that, it really helps your pitcher."
Washington worked their way back into the game with a run in the fifth and then would draw to within one in the sixth on Grant Psomas' three run homer. Lake Erie responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a bases loaded walk by Gronkowski to make it 8-6. Washington refused to go away. as they tacked on a run in the seventh but Lake Erie reliever Cristobal Mata was able to keep the Wild Things off the board for the remainder of the game.
Brent Lysander worked five innings for Lake Erie, giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season. Mata recorded his second save of the year.
The series continues on Saturday night as the Crushers and Wild Things play game two of their three game series. Paul Fagan will get the start for Lake Erie against Washington's Brian McCullough.
