LOVES PARK, Ill. - Starting pitcher Jay Monti and the Rockford bullpen combined on a six-hitter on Friday as the RiverHawks beat Gateway, 5-1.

Jason James hit a home run to tie the all-time RiverHawks RBI record and extend his hitting streak to 10 games, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,781 at Road Ranger Stadium. Rockford has won three of its last four games.

Monti (2-3) scattered a run on five hits over seven innings for his first win as a starter. He struck out five without a walk. Marcus McKenzie and John Muller each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The RiverHawks never trailed. Doug Sanders broke a scoreless tie with a RBI single in the fourth inning. Robert Sabates hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

In the seventh inning, Gateway's Joe Scaperotta singled in a run, but the RiverHawks responded in the bottom of the inning with a Jono Brooks RBI single.

In the eighth, James led off with his third home run of the year, a shot to left field. He tied Ben Fjelland's career RBI record of 164. Sabates later scored on a wild pitch.

Gateway starter Adam Bowling struck out six and allowed only an intentional walk, but took the loss. Bowling (1-2) gave up two runs on six hits over six innings.

The series continues at 6:05 p.m. Saturday. It's RiverHawks Mesh Hat night, sponsored by The Power Connection and WIFR. The first 1,000 receive a free RiverHawks lid. The game is not scheduled for local broadcast.
