Early Offense Powers Beach Bums to Win Over Midwest

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums opened a three-game series with the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti by recording a 6-1 win on the first FANtastic Fireworks Friday of the season.

The Beach Bums wasted no time getting started as they plated a pair of runs in the first inning off of Midwest starter James Albury. Corey Whiting led off the inning with the first of his three hits in the ballgame, a two-strike opposite field single to left. With one away Mike Epping belted the first offering over the wall in right for his first homer of the season to put the Beach Bums ahead.

The scoring didn't stop in the first inning as the Beach Bums made it 3-0 with another run in the second frame. Kyle Maunus began the inning with an opposite field double and with two outs Corey Whiting came through with a single to right to score Maunus from second base.

Traverse City chased Albury from the game in the fifth inning, coming up with three unearned runs to reach their total for the evening. James Guerrero was able to reach on an error to start the rally and Mike Epping followed by being hit with a pitch. Following consecutive strikeouts Patrick Perry drove in a run with a single and Kyle Maunus followed with another opposite field double, scoring Epping and Perry to make it a 6-0 lead. Albury was hit with the loss after throwing 4.2 innings and allowing all six runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Midwest picked up its lone run of the game in the sixth inning when Gilberto Zayas drove home Jimmy Baker with a single. Baker had doubled to begin the inning. The run was the only allowed by Beach Bums starter Kevin Reese. Reese threw six innings to up his record to 2-1 on the season. He allowed a run on six hits to go with two walks and a strikeout.

Corey Whiting finished with three hits to pace a 12-hit attack. Kyle Maunus, Mike Epping, Brad Miller, and Patrick Perry all had multiple hits in the contest.

The Beach Bums (10-9) will continue the series with Midwest tomorrow night at 7:05pm. Its Hagerty Insurance Classic Car Night as Hagerty Insurance sponsors a collector car show that will go on during the contest. LHP Shawn Joy (0-0, 4.15) will make his first start of the season for the Beach Bums while Midwest will also throw a lefty, Chris Nyman (0-2, 11.81).
