Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio- The Lake Erie Crushers fell to the Rockford Aviators, 6-5, in a game where ten combined runs were scored in the first three innings and the Rockford pitching staff was able to shut down the Crushers offense following the three run third inning.
For the Crushers (28-38), the loss puts Lake Erie at 9-9 in one run games this season. The Aviators (41-28) finish out the season series against the Crushers with a 4-2 record.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Crushers plated the first runs. Emmanuel Quiles started the big inning when he reached first on an error by third baseman Elijah Trail with one out. Chandler Brock then walked to put runners on first and second. Jose Barraza then came up and reached first on a grounder to third. Trail took the ball and touched third to retire Quiles on the fielder's choice. With two outs, Juan Sanchez then came up and hammered a triple to right center field that plated both Brock and Barraza.
The lead did not last long, as the Aviators tied the game in the second inning. With one out, Brian Bistagne singled and moved to second after Raul Linares was walked. Collin Shaw then doubled to right that scored both Bistagne and Linares and tie the game.
In the third inning, Rockford would take the lead. After Crushers starter Hunter Adkins was able to strike out the first two batters, Rockford then put runs on the board. Devon Rodriguez singled with two outs. Dusty Robinson hit a pop up but the ball was dropped by second baseman Trevor Stevens. Rodriguez advanced to third and Robinson went to second. With two runners in scoring position, Bistagne knocked both runners in with a single to center. Bistagne moved to second on a wild pitch and then came around to score on a single by Trail and the Aviators went up 5-2.
In the bottom of the third, the Crushers would have their fun. Quiles and Brock walked to begin the inning. Barraza then doubled down the third base line. That hit scored both Brock and Quiles to cut the deficit to one run. Sanchez then came up, still with nobody out, and doubled to score Barraza and tie the game at five.
Neither team scored until the top of the eighth when Trail singled with one out for the Aviators. Linares then walked and with runners on first and second, Anthony Renteria hit a one out single. The hit scored Trail and the throw from right field to the plate allowed Linares to reach third and Renteria to advance to second. The runners would be stranded in scoring position as Trevor Longfellow (4-5) was able to get Michael Hur to ground out to third but Rockford had taken 6-5 lead.
For the Crushers, Adkins went 5 2/3 innings allowing seven hits and five runs, with only two of them being earned. He struck out nine Aviators hitters. Mike Devine came in and pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing a run on two hits, walking two and striking out one. Longfellow pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits including the go ahead hit, and picking up the loss. On the Rockford side, starter Payton Baskette went seven innings allowing four hits, five runs, three earned runs and stuck out five. Roberto Padilla (2-2) worked a scoreless eighth inning and picked up the win. Patrick Dolan (5) closed the door in the ninth to pick up the save. The Aviators pitching staff only allowed one hit to the Crushers after the third inning.
