
Rascals Fall Behind Early, Lose 11-4

O'Fallon, MO - The Rascals (35-32) lost their series opener 11-4 to the Joliet Slammers (28-39) on Tuesday, August 4 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
The Slammers took a commanding lead by scoring eight runs over the first two innings. LHP Lucas Laster (L, 2-3) hit the first two batters of the game. Phil Bates then grounded into a doubleplay, but Charlie White came around from second base to score on the twin killing.
In the second inning, two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. A throwing error by 3B Taylor Ard allowed a run to score on a groundball, and White and Bates each hit RBI singles. Alfredo Rodriguez then hit a grandslam to extend the lead to 8-0.
Laster exited the game in the second inning. He surrendered a career-high eight runs, seven earned, on six hits and a walk. He struck out only one batter in a career-low 1.1 inning. RHP Joe Pavlovich entered the game and struck out a career-high four over 4.2 innings of work.
The Rascals scored their first run in the third inning when CF Curran Redal walked, stole second base, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a LF Brian Hansen groundout.
The only three hits and runs surrendered by Pavlovich came in the top of the fifth frame. Mike Garza and Carlos Lopez each singled with one out; Jack Cleary then hit a three-run homer.
The Rascals responded with three runs of their own. SS Josh Silver and Redal hit consecutive doubles to score a run. Two batters later, RF Jackson Slaid hit an RBI double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
RHP Will Schierholz tossed 1.0 scoreless inning, and RHP Zeb Sneed and RHP Derek Cape each struck out two batters in 1.0 perfect inning.
Slammers starter Kevin Walter received a no-decision after surrendered four runs, three earned, over 4.1 innings. Kevin McNorton (W, 5-2) tossed 1.2 scoreless frames and earned the win.
The Rascals and Joliet Slammers will conclude their series with a doubleheader on Thursday, August 6 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. Game 1 will begin at 4:05 p.m. CDT.
