Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, OHIO - The Lake Erie Crushers dropped the series finale to the Evansville Otters as the Otters scored three times in the sixth and the eighth to roll over the Crushers, on a beautiful Thursday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The win for the Otters (9-3) keeps them on top of the East Division as the Crushers (5-6) lose the series and fall to 2-4 at home.
Early on, pitching was the story of the game. Preston Olson (3-0) threw three scoreless innings to start the game and Peter Gehle (1-1) pitched the first five innings of scoreless baseball.
The Crushers scored first in the fourth inning with solo home run off the bat of Wednesday's hero Ty Nelson.
The Otters then responded with three runs in the sixth inning. After back-to-back singles by Jaime Del Valle and Cory Urquhart to begin the inning, Ronnie Richardson tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt. The ball was picked up by Gehle and then a throw that was offline, allowed Del Valle and Urquhart to score. Richardson would move to third on a groundout to first by John Schultz and then scored on a Sacrifice Fly by Shayne Houck.
Again, the Otters scored three times in the top of the 8th inning during a strange inning. Richardson started the rally as he doubled with two outs. He scored on an RBI single by Schultz. Following a single by Houck, and two wild pitches by Crushers pitcher Brad Duffy, Schultz scored. Then, an error by Crushers shortstop Juan Sanchez plated Houck.
The Crushers catcher Emmanuel Quiles, who came on as a defensive replacement in the 8th, hit a solo homer to cut the lead to 6-2, but it was too little too late.
Olson earned the victory after allowing just a run on a pair of hits while fanning five. Gehle took the loss after surrendering three runs, one earned on four hits over 5.1 innings of work.
The Crushers will begin a three game series with the Frontier Greys on Friday night at All Pro Freight Stadium. Lake Erie will send out Rob Blanc (0-0, 1.59). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
