Miners Bats Erupt in Blowout Win for Road Sweep

Marion, Ill. (May 28, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners banged out ten runs and 15 hits, both season-highs, and got another great start from their pitching staff to shut out the Windy City ThunderBolts 10-0 on Thursday night and sweep the series at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Ill.
Miguel Ramirez (1-2) set the tone for the Miners by tossing seven shutout innings to earn his first win of the season, allowing only four hits and five total baserunners with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. Combined with two shutout frames from the bullpen, the Southern Illinois pitching staff did not allow a single run in the final 26 innings of the series after giving up two in the first inning of the first game on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, the Miners' bats were active all night long. They started with two runs in the second inning on an RBI double by Jerrud Sabourin and a sac-fly by Jon Minucci for a 2-0 lead. They immediately extended that out to 5-0 in the next inning, with Wendell Fairley getting an RBI single and Sabourin driving in two more with the bases loaded on a single.
In the third, the Miners would put the game away with three more runs. Steve Marino and Brendan Slattery both recorded RBIs in the frame, with Slattery's representing his first professional run batted in. The Miners were not done, as they tacked on two more runs in the ninth on RBIs by Slattery and Aaron Gates to complete the emphatic sweep.
Sabourin, Slattery and Fairley all had three-hit games for Southern Illinois, with Fairley scoring three runs as well. Niko Vasquez also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Michael Earley scored two more runs in the blowout for the Miners, who improved their road record to 5-1 in 2015 with the victory. Every single starting player for the Miners got on base at least once, with all but one recording at least one hit in the ten-run outburst.
The Miners will now return home to begin a six-game homestand on Friday night against the Joliet Slammers at 7:05 p.m. Rick Teasley will start for Southern Illinois against Joliet's Andrew Strenge.
