
Slammers Fall to Aviators in Rubber Game

Rockford, IL - Behind a huge third inning the Rockford Aviators (11-1) gave the Joliet Slammers 6-6) their biggest loss of the season by a 12-1 final on Thursday night.
After making little noise in the first two innings, the Aviators erupted for six runs in the third inning against pitcher Brett DeVall. 3B Elijah Trail led off the frame with a double to left and came around to score on 1B Greg Velazquez single. CF Michael Hurr moved Velazquez to second with a base knock, and SS Brian Bistagne reached with a bunt single to load the bases. A two-RBI single by 2B Tanner Witt scored both Hurr and Velazquez. A double by LF Teo Martinez brought in Bistagne to make it 5-0. Martinez came around on a Dusty Robinson double to make the 6-0 after the third inning.
Aviators pitcher Tony Rizotti kept the Slammers at bay, shutting them out through seven innings. The Aviators padded their lead with two runs in the sixth inning. Facing Slammers pitcher Jacob Butler, Trail singled to lead off the inning and later moved to second when Hurr walked. Bistagne cranked a double to left, scoring Trail and Hurr to put Rockford up 6-0. They added a run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Robinson, and three runs in the seventh.
The Slammers avoided the shutout with run in the ninth inning off Matt Frahm. With two outs, SS Alfredo Rodriguez and SS Hunter Ridge reached on an error. Rodriguez would come around score as the shortstop Bistagne misplayed a groundball off the bat of catcher Dante Rosenberg making the score 12-1. That would be the final total, as DeVall (0-1) took the loss. Aviators pitcher Tony Rizotti (2-0) tossed seven scoreless innings to pick up the win.
NOTES: Mike Garza extended his hitting streak to six games...The Slammers are now 1-5on the road this year...the Slammers have now given up 60 hits on the road with an ERA above 6.00 in six games compared to a 3.33 ERA at home with only 47 hits allowed in six games...The Slammers were held scoreless for 16 straight innings between the second frame of game two and the ninth of game three...Jacob Butler gave up his first run of the year in the sixth inning... The Slammers didn't commit an error the entire series...the Slammers next play the Southern Illinois Miners...The first pitch of game one is 7:05pm on Friday from Marion, IL.
