Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

WUERFEL PARK The Traverse City Beach Bums used excellent pitching to split a twilight doubleheader from the Frontier Greys on Thursday. After falling 3-2 in the opener, the Beach Bums recovered to take the night cap 5-0.

Luis DeJesus pitched five superb innings, allowing no runs on two hits to earn the win in the second game. In the first game, Anthony Montefusco suffered the loss but was dominant on the mound. He struck out eight over 5.1 innings pitched matching an individual high for the Beach Bums' pitcher this season.

Yazy Arbelo had three hits, all doubles, in the second game to lead the Beach Bums' offense. Sam Bumpers collected a pair of hits in the first game.

The Frontier Greys took game one behind their own outstanding pitching. Starter Colin Feldtman lasted six innings surrendering a single run on four hits. A RBI single in the first inning by Richard Tanner put the Greys in front 1-0 and the lead held until the fifth.

That's when Jake Rhodes led off with a homer to right center, his first of the season, to tie the game.

Frontier answered in the top of the sixth. Shane Brown walked and Julio Rodriguez singled to lead off. A passed ball advanced the runners and a two-run triple off the center field wall by Jhiomar Veras scored them both to give the Greys a 3-1 margin.

The Beach Bums tried to rally in the seventh. With two outs and the bases empty, Bumpers doubled and scored on a Reggie Lawson pinch hit RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2. However, that is where the comeback stopped and Michael Joseph would get the final out to take the save.

The second game was dominated by Beach Bums pitching. No Greys' runner reached until an error in the fourth, and DeJesus didn't allow a hit until two outs in the fifth. In fact, the Beach Bums were just seven outs from the club's first ever no-hitter.

At the plate, the Beach Bums supported DeJesus. The Beach Bums scored a pair of runs in the second inning. Arbelo raced home from third base on a wild pitch and a Graham Ramos RBI single plated Bumpers and it was 2-0.

In the fifth, Lawson knocked in a run with a two-out RBI single and it was 3-0. Then in the sixth, Jose Vargas iced the game with a two-run single to make the final 5-0.

Along with DeJesus and Montefusco, relievers Brett Dahlson, Andrew Brockett and Chuck Ghysels each worked scoreless innings of relief in the doubleheader.

The Beach Bums conclude their first home stand with an overall record of 5-6 and begin a nine-game trip Friday at Rockford at 7:30pm eastern time. Traverse City is back at home June 9th-June 14th.

NOTE: With his second at bat in the first game, Jose Vargas officially become the club's all-time leader in at bats. He passes former teammate Chase Burch. Vargas ended the doubleheader with 1,325 at bats in a Beach Bums' uniform.

All games are broadcast live on 98.1 The Bear.
