Joliet, IL -- The Joliet Slammers, presented by ATI Physical Therapy, and the Joliet Area Community Hospice announce a joint anti-bullying campaign called BATS (Bullying Awareness and Teen Support) that kicks off at the Joliet Slammers Teacher Appreciation and Anti-Bullying Night on Tuesday, June 2 at Silver Cross Field.

On Tuesday, June 2, the Joliet Slammers and Joliet Area Community Hospice (JACH) invite all area teachers and students to come out and learn more about the program. Teachers and students interested in getting involved in the program come fall can contact Arcillius Calhoun at 815-460-3261 from the Joliet Area Community Hospice to inquire about FREE tickets for Tuesday's game.

Students also have the opportunity to take a "Peace Pledge," vowing to stand up against bullying. Signed pledges can be redeemed in person at the Joliet Slammers box office on Tuesday, June 2 for a ticket to that night's game. The Pledge can be found online at www.jolietslammers.com.

The BATS Campaign came as a result of an increase in demand from Joliet area junior-high students looking for a supportive outlet to talk about and cope with effects related to bullying. The campaign takes a long term approach to (1) raise awareness of the bullying that occurs within Joliet and its surrounding communities, (2) provide support to students dealing with bullying-related issues, and (3) encourage students to speak and act out against bullying.

"Bullying is a major issue facing academic institutions today," Interim Chief Executive Office Duane Krieger said. "Partnering with the Joliet Slammers will bring attention to this issue and help introduce early intervention. We have a responsibility to care for our community beyond the scope of providing expert end-of-life care, and the counseling services we provide will be used as a resource to schools and the community to help eradicate bullying."

In fall of 2015, the JACH and Joliet Slammers will begin a series of school visits, outlining bullying as a present issue and offering ways students and teachers can get involved to take action against bullying. Students have the opportunity to take a "Peace Pledge," vowing to stand up against bullying. The Peace Pledge can be found online at www.jolietslammers.com.

The campaign will have its foothold in junior-high schools, where students are more likely to experience the effects of bullying. The hope is to build the program in years to come and expand the campaign's outreach.
