
Crushers fall in rubber match

AVON, Ohio -- A fifth inning homer from Gateway catcher Landon Hernandez snapped a 1-1 tie on Sunday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium, as the Grizzlies went on to take the rubber match in the three game series with the Lake Erie Crushers, in a 6-1 final.
Lake Erie (1-2) out hit the Grizzlies (2-1)for the third night in a row, but the Crushers stranded eight base runners on the night, and could only push one run across.
The Grizzlies plated the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, on a two-out run scoring double from Jet Butler. The Crushers tied the game in the home half of the third. Max Casper and Kevin Berard stroked back-to-back one out singles, before Casper came home on a wild pitch to plate Lake Erie's lone run.
Gateway had two on with two out in the fifth inning, when Hernandez hit the first homerun of the series, a three-run shot to left to snap a 1-1 tie and gave the Grizzlies the lead again.
The Grizzlies added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning. Jose Flores began the inning with a walk, and eventually came around on a wild pitch. Vladimir Frias drove in the final run of the contest on a single to plate Jet Butler.
Alex Kaminsky (0-1) suffered the loss for the Crushers. He allowed four runs on just three hits, but walked five batters over five innings of work. Gateway lefty Gregg Downing (1-0) scored the victory, after allowing an unearned run on five hits while fanning five over six strong innings.
The last third of the Lake Erie batting order combined to go 5-for-9, with the ninth batter in the order, Kevin Berard, leading the charge offensively with a 3-for-4 performance. Guantlett Eldemire singled again, going 1-for-4, and reached in every game of the series. The Shaker Heights, Ohio, native went 5-for-11 in the series to lead the Crushers at the plate.
The Crushers are off on Monday, but will begin a three game series against the Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park on Tuesday evening. The Crushers will start left hander Dave Middendorf (1-0, 0.00), and the Miners will counter with right hander Hayden Simpson. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
