Gateway Grizzlies News Release
AVON, OH - Landon Hernandez blasted a three-run fifth inning home run and the Gateway Grizzlies cruised to a 6-1 victory Sunday in the rubber game of their weekend series with the Lake Erie Crushers at All Pro Freight Stadium.
Hernandez broke a 1-1 fifth inning tie with his 37th career home run. It was his third extra base hit of the weekend.
The Grizzlies capped off their scoring in the eighth inning, plating runs on a wild pitch and a Vladimir Frias RBI single.
Frias paced the Gateway (2-1) offense with two hits. Jet Butler collected his second RBI double of the season and Jose Flores walked three times in the game.
Grizzlies' pitching was solid once again. Gregg Downing (1-0) got the start against Lake Erie (1-2) and allowed just one run (unearned) on five hits in six innings to earn the win. The left-hander from Howard Beach, NY struck out five batters.
Ryan Hartman, Zac Treece and Chris Enourato each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Gateway now plays their home opener Tuesday night against Joliet. Right-hander Tucker Jensen gets the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05.
